A mother of three, Veena enjoys working beside her mother, Manju from their home in the slums of Ahmedabad.
-
Veena's husband works pulling a rickshaw-grueling, manual labor that's done despite the commonly 100+ degree temperatures in Ahmedabad.
-
As is the case with many families in this particular community, Veena's husband has an alcohol addiction that's created deep and painful problems for the family.
-
Embroidering our organic cotton pieces gives Veena a happy escape from the painful environment surrounding her.
-
On behalf of GIANNA and Veena, thank you for taking the time to read her story and purchase her products.
Veena's life has been affected by heartache and despair, but through all of this, she's able to take a moment to smile-she smiles in thanks for work, for the strong women in her life, and for having more opportunity than many in her native village.
-
Having an alcoholic husband has been a challenge for Veena. She's finding solace with other women and managing to the best of her ability.
-
To add additional pain to the situation, Veena's two married sons also struggle with alcohol. In this community, there are few escapes from the harsh reality of life, so many of the men turn to alcohol...
-
Veena's mother, daughter, and other women neighbors provide community and support. They often enjoy embroidering together and share domestic duties.
When you ask Veena about her dreams, you feel her answer more than hear her answer.
-
She dreams about a day when her husband and sons no longer turn to alcohol to escape the struggles of slum-living.
-
Veena hopes that one day life isn't so difficult for her family.
-
She's grateful for the work and says thank you, and please buy more!
The difference economic opportunity creates goes beyond merely money. We have found that fulfilling basic needs for food and shelter frees an artisan so they're able to think about improving their lives, not just subsisting.
-
For women, including Veena, this means free attendance at healthcare and nutrition camps.
-
There's also a food security program that loans artisans wheat and spice securities.
-
Thank you for making our work possible.
