Artisan ID #: TEK-A-28

Married to an auto-rickshaw driver, Urmila embroiders about four hours a day, interspersing embroidery with other household duties.

  • The income she earns from embroidery goes toward supporting her family of eight-two children of her own, her husband, her mother-in-law, her brother and sister-in-law, and their child.
  • Tears fill her eyes as she recalls a turbulent childhood losing her father, the principal bread winner.
  • After marriage and the untimely-death of her father-in-law, she turned to embroidery as a means to help support her family.
  • Urmila is thankful that you are taking the time to read her story and hopes you love her products as much as she loves making them!

Urmila's typical day begins at 5 in the morning, when she cleans the house, cooks, and sees her husband off to his auto-rickshaw job

  • With two young children to care for, Urmila intersperses embroidery throughout her daily routine, cumulatively working about four hours a day from home.
  • When you ask Urmila about allowing her children to finish school and possibly attend college, she says that they'll wait and see-it depends on finances and on the children's willingness to study hard.
  • Aside from buying household necessities, Urmila saves a small amount of her earnings each month as a "savings fund" for her daughter's marriage or education-whichever happens first.

Aside from wanting to help her two children achieve their dreams, Urmila thinks about security.

  • She dreams of the day when she's no longer worried about having money to buy food.
  • Urmila takes great pride in her ability to significantly contribute to her family's income each month.
  • With great passion, Urmila says she dreams about being able to have even bigger dreams!

The difference having work creates in Urmila's life goes far beyond a mere financial transaction.

  • Embroidery gives Urmila confidence-she's able to make money and materially-contribute to her family's living.
  • Besides a fair trade wage, Urmila also takes advantage of the health camps offered, the food security loans, free books, and other related resources.
  • Perhaps the greatest difference working makes in Urmila's life is the ability to feel like a valuable member of her community. "Thank you very much. Please enjoy my pieces."
