A weaver since age 6, Sang learned the art from her mother.
-
Sang is from the Tai Daeng ethnic group, which is known for excellent weaving through-out Laos.
-
In her home village of Xam Tai, girls learn how to weave before age 10. Sang's daughter, Lah, learned how to weave at age 6.
-
Like the other women in her village, Sang's primary "occupation" is to help her husband grow rice and other crops for subsistence.
Earnings from weaving provide her with cash to pay for other household expenses.
Sang married at age 18 and before becoming pregnant at age 20, she asked her husband if they could move to a place with proper roads, clinics, and schools.
-
This prompted the move to her current village, which is about 4 hours from Vientiane, the capital city.
-
Sang now has 4 children ranging in ages from 14 to 7. She proudly says that all are in school!
-
She weaves for 4-6 hours a day, interspersing weaving between other daily duties, like cooking, hand-washing laundry for her family of 6, etc.
-
Lah, Sang's daughter, has already mastered the art of weaving Lao skirt borders. She's working on mastering scarves now.
Sang has many dreams that she's eager to share:
-
"Whenever we have extra money, I buy wood so that we can build a real house one day. I hope we can do this in 2 years."
-
Sang smiles and looks into the distance when she says that she would like to continue working until she is very old so that all her children can finish high school and do jobs they want to do. "I hope their lives will be easier than mine."
-
Sang believes that the family is number one priority. Her dream is to always have her wonderful family near-by.
The opportunities created by weaving GIANNA pieces go far beyond the actual pieces. Each piece represents a dream that's been achieved.
-
Working with us has given Sang access to a greater market outside of Laos.
-
Sang has learned about organic, natural dyeing methods, which she's excitedly shared with other women in her village.
-
Sang has learned about product consistency, time management, and other valuable skills.
-
"Thank you for making these things possible. I am happy."
