An educated, strong-willed, and independent woman, Rekha graduated from Navgujarat College and loves the opportunity crafting organic cotton pillows has created.
-
Rekha's earnings go first toward paying her school fees (she's studying management currently).
-
If money is leftover in any given month, it goes toward her family's household expenses.
-
Her mother is the only other breadwinner in the family, so Rekha takes great pride in sharing with us that she's self-reliant and has not had to ask her mother for any financial assistance.
-
Rekha happily works 4-5 hours a day from home, often sitting in the shade outside while her grandparents sit on a cot and watch the world pass by!
Rekha's story is one of determination and accomplishment. She's an example of a self-reliant woman rising above the poverty into which she was born.
-
An Ahmedabad native, Rekha attended Navgujarat College and currently attends another institution studying management.
-
Her father passed away last year in an accident, leaving Rekha and her mother with the responsibility of supporting the family.
-
Rekha's days are long and begin by waking at 7, cooking and cleaning, working from 12-4:30, attending evening school, cooking again, then studying before going to sleep.
-
It's a hectic life right now, but one that Rekha loves!
We asked Rekha about her dreams, and she told us bluntly, "I want a job that will make me financially independent."
-
She's seen so many women dependent upon their husbands for support that the strong-willed Rekha has vowed to never be forced to stay in a bad situation because she doesn't have the money to leave.
-
As is normal in her community, Rekha's mother is currently looking for a suitable husband for her. Rekha has clearly stipulated that he must have an education and a good job-"otherwise, marrying will be a liability for me. I don't want that."
-
If Rekha had one wish, she'd wish that her family "lives happily ever after."
Embroidery work has given Rekha a chance to learn entrepreneurial skills that will always allow her to be independent.
-
She says there's a new way of thinking when a woman can support herself. (We couldn't agree more!)
-
Aside from the obvious advantages of being able to support her family financially, Rekha loves that working means she's also able to splurge on the occasional Bollywood flick and spend time with girlfriends.
