Artisan ID #: TEK-A-20
Originally from the Uttar Pradesh part of northern India, Prabhavati moved to Gujarat in hopes of finding more opportunity.
-
Her husband's job is pushing a rented handcart through the streets of Ahmedabad.
-
The couple has three children, two of whom Prabhavati had to leave in her home village because they could not afford to take them to Gujarat. The children live with their grandparents, and Prabhavati sends small amounts of money to them when she's able.
-
Prabhavati and her husband live in a rented room in one of the low-lying slums next to the river in Ahmedabad.
-
Although life is still wrought with financial challenges, Prabhavati works with a smile and instills love into the pieces she embroiders.
For many women in India, life is destined based on the caste into which one is born. Such is the case with Prabhavati.
-
Born in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Prabhavati moved to Ahmedabad in 2001.
-
Life in the slums has been difficult, but there are still more opportunities here than in her native village to the north.
-
Prabhavati's husband returns to their village once per year with small provisions for their children and family. She returns once every 3-4 years due to financial limitations.
-
Prabhavati has accepted her caste-position in Indian society, but she still dreams of a life with more abundant opportunities.
Asking women like Prabhavati to dream is an anomaly. For them, life is still a hand-to-mouth existence. Working with us provides opportunities, but it takes time to create lasting change in a person's life.
-
To this end, Prabhavati is still learning to manage the money she earns.
-
Her dream is to have a life of abundance, or at the very least, a life without excessive need.
-
Thank you for helping us make this dream come true.
Like many of our artisans, Prabhavati works from home, which means she's able to tend to domestic duties while earning an income.
-
When a woman in Prabhavati's community is able to materially contribute to the family finances, she earns respect-respect from her husband, her children, her friends, and herself. Such is the case with Prabhavati.
-
She also enjoys interacting with other women and learning new embroidery designs. "Thank you very much," she says with a smile.
