Artisan ID #: BHXT-NT-04

35 years old and a master weaver, Nouthong is an innovative, determined, and hard-working team leader who's become a role model in her village.

  • Once Nouthong learned the old ways of using organic, natural materials to create dyes, she set-out to find unique colors only her village could create. From this, she's developed an earthy brown/black color that's become quite popular with our market in the US!
  • Income from weaving provides enough financial stability to support her family of five and keep all three children in school.
  • Nouthong considers her family fortunate compared to others. "We have enough to eat, and with the money I earn from weaving, we can meet all our family's expenses," she says smiling.

With an attentive, heart-felt demeanor, Nouthong has repeatedly asked for feedback on her weaving and continually tries to improve and innovate.

  • As team leader for 60 weavers in her village, Nouthong actively manages quality control, product consistency, and generally keeps us all on our toes!
  • Mother of three, Nouthong proudly tells you that her children are all in school thanks to the financial security weaving provides.
  • Nouthong is happily married to Bounsone, a tuk-tuk driver who transports passengers to and from town.

When she's not weaving, Nouthong can be found in the rice fields, talking with her sisters who live in the same village, or caring for her children.

  • Her dreams include seeing her three children graduate from high school and get good jobs, preferably near her village!
  • She'd also like to save enough money to replace her husband's tuk-tuk with a van so he's able to earn more money in his transportation business.

Nouthong smiles broadly when you ask her about the difference working with GIANNA has created for her.

  • "Before doing this work, we wove Lao skirt borders, which was a declining business. We've learned new weaving techniques, dyeing techniques, and entrepreneurial skills with GIANNA."
  • We have worked with Nouthong and the weavers she leads to help them learn about fair trade pricing, how to consistently create high-quality pieces, and how to value their time.
