Noud

Laos

Artisan ID #: BNXB-N-01

At 25 years old, what strikes you about Noud when you meet her is her warm smile and heartfelt kindness.

  • The fourth of seven children, Noud left her village at age fifteen to escape poverty and live a somewhat better life with her uncle in Vientiane.
  • Noud has supported herself by weaving since she was 15 years old.
  • She's a proud mother of 2 children, farmer, weaving team leader, and master weaver - a busy woman!
  • The trust and respect that comes with being a master weaver has empowered Noud to feel good about herself, even though she did not receive much education growing up.

When she's not weaving, Noud is working in her rice field, teaching other women new weaving techniques, or playing with her children.

  • "It wasn't always so happy. Before, I worked very long hours weaving and made such little money."
  • The family's rice farm doesn't provide enough food for the family, so Noud's weaving income helps make ends meet.
  • Noud believes in helping the other women in her village, even if it means sacrificing her own free time to weave and make money herself.
  • Her gentle, giving soul make Noud a wonderful role model and mentor for young girls in her village.

You could call Noud a "budding entrepreneur." She's always coming up with ways to help the women in her village. When we asked Noud about her dreams, she said:

  • "I have seen women in Vientiane set-up small shops. I would like to do that one day."
  • Noud dreams about sharing her success and opportunities with other women in her village.

Noud loves being able to work with other women in her village. "Being in a group gives us a sense of solidarity. We have the opportunity to learn new things during the trainings, and after the training, we continue to meet regularly and support each other."

  • Noud has found community, respect, empowerment, and opportunity by working with us.
  • She'd love to set-up a weaving workshop in Vientiane someday in the future.
  • Noud's work with us has helped give her the courage to dream. "Thank you."
