MaeCam

Laos

Artisan ID #: BHXT-MK-02

MaeCam typically works from either her home or her sister's home, which is located a dusty 10-minute walk across the village.

  • Her family has been weaving Lao "sinh" skirt borders for generations.
  • When the market for skirt borders became over-saturated, MaeCam realized she'd have to innovate and modify her weavings to survive.
  • This led her to inquire about working with us. Over time, MaeCam has learned not only new weaving techniques, but also ways to manage her finances and save for unanticipated future expenses.
  • MaeCam's sunny demeanor comes across in all that she does, especially when you watch her weaving beside her sisters. Purity, wholeness, and love is woven into each piece.
  • "Thank you for buying my pieces. I add love to my pieces. Thank you."

For 32-year old MaeCam, weaving has become a hobby and a way to improve her family's life.

  • MaeCam enjoys the creativity involved in creating eco-friendly natural dyes from the plants around her village.
  • She weaves with her sister, Nouthong, before and after lunch when their children are at school.
  • MaeCam says she has always wanted to improve her life and is so grateful that she can do this while having fun!
  • "Thank you for buying my pieces. I add love to my pieces. I am happy and proud to make products for you. Thank you."

MaeCam giggles when you ask her about her dreams.

  • In a shy, almost girly-way, says that she dreams of having a nice house made of bricks one day. She reiterates, "made of brick, not wood!"
  • She says that she would like to help her family buy a car since it is difficult for all (four) of them to go somewhere together.
  • MaeCam would like to earn enough money so her husband can stop his low-paying government job and do things he enjoys. She also dreams of buying more land so her children can "have a good life when they are adults."

Before MaeCam began working with us, she made borders for traditional Lao skirts and traveled over 5 hours one-way to sell them at the market.

  • Working with GIANNA has been an opportunity to reach new markets, develop new designs, and learn new skills for quality control and consistency.
  • MaeCam says it has been fun learning with her family and with such fun people!
