Artisan ID #: BPD-KP-01
Originally from Xieng Houng province in the northern part of Laos, Kampha and her family moved to their current village in search of land to build a rice farm.
-
Supplementing her husband's income as a rice farmer, Kampha's earnings from weaving cover necessities, like buying gas for the motorbike, medical fees and school fees.
-
Weaving has taught her basic business skills, like costing, quality control, and fair trade pricing.
-
With only a motorbike to transport her family of six, Kampha hopes to save enough money for a small, used car someday.
-
"Sabaidee and thank you for knowing about me. I hope you like my scarves. Thank you very much."
Kampha is currently a team leader for the 14 weavers in her local village.
-
Kampha initially wove skirt borders for traditional Lao "sinh" skirts, but when market values dropped due to over-supply, she realized she had to learn new weaving techniques.
-
What Kampha's husband, Boualiene, says about her weaving "I am glad that my wife can earn money. We could not pay for necessities otherwise."
-
Kampha enjoys weaving because it gives her a very tangible sense of purpose and direction. She also likes the collaboration required to be an effective team leader for her village.
Aside from imagining a time when money isn't as scarce, Kampha dreams about:
-
Having a small used car instead of the old motorbike to transport her family of six.
-
Being able to allow her kids to purchase books and other materials needed for school
-
Sending money to her home province in the northern part of Lao to help pay for the living expenses of her parents and in-laws.
The weaving work that Kampha does for GIANNA provides her with an opportunity to:
-
Teach other women in her village how to improve their lives as she has done
-
Learn new weaving techniques and business skills
-
Take part in a microlending program that allows her to slowly pay back borrowed funds at low interest rates.
