Anita was raised by her mother in the Baneras region of India, and now lives with her husband, children, and relatives in a small house in the slums of Ahmedabad. She has two children.
- While her family situation provides little income and many challenges, Anita has found security, an income, and a community by working with GIANNA and a local Indian non-profit organization. For the first time she has a stable income, food security, and a safe and welcoming place to go in the city she now calls home.
- She embroiders pillows 4-6 hours a day, which provides a much-needed respite from the turmoil in her daily life.
- Despite a very challenging life, Anita remains resolved that her children will have a better life.
After an arranged marriage under false pretenses, Anita found herself struggling with nearly every aspect of her life.
- With no father and having a distanced mother, Anita was forced to leave her home village and travel to Ahmedabad in search of work.
- Her husband and she share cramped living quarters with her in-laws. However, as is normal in the slums, family disputes erupt often and end badly.
- Embroidery provides Anita with an escape and a means to earn money.
It's difficult for Anita to answer our questions about her dreams-her life is one of hardship, abuse, and continual work.
- When we gently ask her several times about her dreams, Anita says that she dreams that life will get better.
- She dreams about a day when her husband recovers from his drinking problem, when they have enough money to have a house of their own, and a day when she's able to have a better life.

- Working with other women gives Anita a sense of sisterhood and comfort in knowing that she's not alone in her struggles.
- The financial means embroidery provides allows Anita to contribute to family expenses, which gives her a sense of empowerment and confidence.
